40th Wenzhou New Year Run kicks off

On January 1, the 2023 “Wenzhou News Cup” New Year Run kicked off in Sanyang Wetland Park.

At 8 a.m. on January 1, the 2023 “Wenzhou News Cup” New Year Run kicked off in Sanyang Wetland Park. About 500 runners from 25 running groups participated in the event, including the Private Entrepreneur Running Group, the World Wenzhouese Running Group, and the Grassroots Community Running Group.

At the same time, the New Year Virtual Runs began. Virtual runs are not limited to any specific location (parks, greenways, and treadmills), and there are 3km and 5km race types. As long as the runners complete the virtual runs at any place and submit the result online between 8:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. on New Year's Day, they can get the electronic certificate for the race. According to statistics, this race has attracted more than 3,000 runners across Wenzhou, and many participants from other provinces and cities take part in this event. Among them, 56% of runners registered for the 5 km race, and 44% registered for the 3km race.

The launching ceremony of the event was held in Sanyang Wetland Park. Many runners gathered on the North Square of Sanyang Wetland Park in the early morning. Twenty Wenzhou Shoes Capital Running Group runners of Wenzhou Marathon Association participated in the event. Yu Junchuan, born in Sichuan, has worked and lived in Wenzhou for 18 years and practiced running for four years. He said that during the three years of the pandemic, he and his fellow runners were subject to many restrictions and unable to participate in many races. “This is the first run of the new year, and every runner participates enthusiastically. I hope to participate in more marathons in 2023 and live a healthy life.” Yu Junchuan participated in the Wenzhou Marathon in 2019 and 2020 and the Longwan Half Marathon in 2021. He hopes the Wenzhou Marathon, suspended for two years due to the pandemic, will be held as scheduled in 2023.

After warm-up preparations, 25 running groups started from the North Square of Sanyang Wetland in square formation in turn, passed through Shangjiang Road, and ended at the west entrance of Sanyang Wetland, with a total distance of about 3.5 kilometers.

As a traditional New Year activity in Wenzhou, the New Year Run has become a much-loved mass sports event in Wenzhou. It has been successfully held for 39 sessions; this year is the 40th session. Over the last three years, the New Year Run has switched to a virtual run in 2022 and the combination of the virtual and offline run model in 2023. Local sports authorities actively respond to the pandemic, vigorously develops smart sports, and starts the coordinated development of the online and offline mass sport.

This year's New Year Run is broadcast live and integrated with 5G panoramic online fitness running technology. The 5G mobile CPE and VR acquisition equipment simulates Sanyang Wetland Park in a panoramic view. Runners can only experience and feel the event's atmosphere by wearing 5G VR glasses. The 5G panoramic virtual run has been tested simultaneously in Hangzhou, Shanghai, Beijing, and Wenzhou. It is estimated that more than 3,000 people across the country will complete the virtual run.
