On June 23, Wenzhou Cultural & Tourism Consumption Season and the 2022 Qingdeng Bazaar National Aesthetic Conference opened at the Qingdeng Museum.

“Bazaar”, a concept emerged long ago, has now taken on a new look because of culture and creativity.

The five-day Wenzhou Cultural & Tourism Consumption Season and the 2022 Qingdeng Bazaar National Aesthetic Conference kicked off at the Qingdeng Museum in Ouhai District at 7 pm on June 23. The visitors can go shopping, view the exhibitions and appreciate scenery in this all-in-one bazaar which brings together over 900 distinct Chinese brands, including 300 top brands, and 100,000 art works, all displaying the aesthetics of culture and life. An immersive experience of both the hustle and bustle of life and the latest fashion is right here waiting for the residents.

All that are lovable can be traded in the market

“It is called NingZhiGao, a kind of perfume in ancient China, made of natural plants,” said Li Rui, director of Diaoqing Society (“Diaoqing” is a kind of traditional Chinese tattoo using blue ink). Li opened a small box and a pleasing smell immediately greeted the people around. Diaoqing Society, based in Pingyao County of North China’s Shanxi Province, covers a wide spectrum of cultural products, such as lacquer bags, traditional Chinese rouge, and tea, its flagship product. “We want to reinvigorate intangible cultural heritage and bring it back to consumer market. This is what we are working for,” he said.

“Wenzhou’s Qingdeng Bazaar is well-known across China and that is the reason why we are here. We shipped our products to Wenzhou last year for the 2021 Bazaar, but the event has been postponed to this June,” said Li. In his eyes, it is a blessing that Qingdeng Bazaar can be held as COVID-19 subsides. “I do hope that cultural elements from Shanxi can add splendor to the lives of Wenzhouese.”

Qingdeng Bazaar features such integration of intangible cultural heritage and modern fashion. It has also been regarded as an “incubator” and a “testing field” for the brands in cultural and creative industries.

With good aesthetic “taste” and “appearance”, all kinds of vintage items and creative fashion products, ranging from handmade leather products, bamboo woven products, ironware to refreshments, have captured the hearts of many. Here and there, people are busy asking for prices and chatting about the stories behind the products.

The bazaar where people can experience on-hand buying has become a unique consumer market. “This is my third time here. At the previous two events, I have bought the things I like,” said Ms. Meng, a local resident. What drives Meng and her friends to be here are the products that have gone viral in “Douyin”, China’s TikTok, and “Xiaohongshu”, a life-sharing platform in China. Many young people in fashionable clothes come here also for the much sought-after photogenic spots.

The bazaar this time is also a platform for many niche brands of handmade products, such as Yabuxidi, Shanzhonggu Arts, Wanran Teaware, Xiachongyubing, Xiaokuan Bamboo Product and Xunwuqi. “We’ve been making progress together with the merchants through the bazaar. The brands have thus been keeping up with the changing market and improving their product quality,” said the organizer of the bazaar.

Promoting the beauty of life

Along the Wenzhou-Rui’an Canal and the quaint stone carvings, people enjoy visiting the meticulously decorated stalls in search of the vintage items as they remember. The bazaar itself is an eye-catching scenery.

This year’s event puts a group of “big names” in handicrafts from all over China together, including Guo Zhenyi, a blacksmithing artist, Cheng Bo, a flavor seeker, Chen Xiaoshan, a tailor, and Wu Yanhui, an artist of mud and fire, to name but a few. They want to make people buy not just their products but also their simple and exquisite lifestyles.

“Jicun”, based in Anji County of East China’s Zhejiang Province, is named after its founder and mainly sells bamboo woven products, such as teaware, stationery, flowerpots and daily items. Its unique nostalgic vibe makes the brand the standout among all the competitors. With the integration of modern aesthetics into traditional Chinese bamboo weaving crafts, Jicun redesigned and recreated its products for “people’s daily life” to galvanize public attention to bamboo items again.

“An increasing number of people begin to use handmade products,” said Donglai, the director of DDV leather products. He interprets it as people’s stronger pursuit of individuality and life quality. “I see many familiar or unfamiliar faces at the Qingdeng Bazaar. They are all very interesting,” Donglai added. The bazaar for him is a good place to meet more like-minded friends.

“A good market sets high standards for the products and stall design,” said the organizer of Qingdeng Bazaar, who have been carefully selecting the brands. The exhibitors of the previous bazaars, including independent designers, craftspeople, tea masters, ancient art collectors, gourmets, oriental aesthetics lovers, musicians and other trendsetters, all brought with them their personalized products and aesthetic concepts to Wenzhouese.

New cultural and tourism IP empowers city development

“During the Song Dynasty (960-1279), Ou porcelain, as a traditional Wenzhou local industry, were sold at home and abroad through the Maritime Silk Road...” On the opening day of Bazaar, an art exhibition themed by Song flavored Wenzhou culture was held in the Enamel Museum near the Qingdeng Museum. Hu Yihao, a well-known local collector of Ou porcelain and the exhibition curator, offered an introduction to the Ou porcelain of the Song Dynasty featuring superb calcination craft, with his eyes glowing with pride. “The exhibition stages the celadon from Ou kiln and the porcelain unearthed in other kilns of Zhejiang, as well as the Ou porcelain works created by the students of Zhejiang Dongfang Polytechnic and other colleges. “We do wish to better inherit and promote Ou kiln culture through the exhibition and communication,” said Hu.

People are able to experience both classy and down-to-earth events. The 5-day bazaar will see water market, tea parties, outdoor concerts, lectures, art exhibitions themed by East Asian culture and Song flavored Wenzhou culture, “Night at Wen-Rui Tang River” and newsboy experiential activities for kids. As one of the highlights, the outdoor concerts will be given by six Wenzhou local bands who will perform for five days in a row in the West Square of Qingdeng Bazaar (across from the south courtyard of Qingdeng Museum).

The bazaar is fueling a traditional market renaissance and exploring the driving force for the city development.

In recent years, Wenzhou has registered robust economic growth by fostering cultural, creative and other consumer goods sectors. Committed to making itself a common prosperity demonstration city and “a happy city featuring a millennial trade port”, Wenzhou plans to take more steps to make Qingdeng Bazaar the best one of its kind with nationwide influence in China and build the area along the Wenzhou-Rui’an Canal into a cultural tourism cluster.
