Construction site of the shield project of the Oujiang Beikou Tunnel

On the north and south shores of the Oujiang River, construction is in full swing in each bid section of the rail transit. Standing tower cranes and roaring machines are witnessing the birth of a new rail transit.

Recently, “Wenzhou Rail Transit construction team” of the Wenzhou Mass Transit Railway Investment Group (WZMTR) won the collective award of “2021 Wenzhou Heroes - Ten Persons Touching Wenzhou”. On May 5th, the reporter approached the team to learn about their painstaking efforts in the construction.

Unyielding spirit for something unprecedented nationwide

Wenzhou Rail Transit Line S2 is 63.63 kilometers long, connecting Yueqing, Oujiangkou New District, Longwan District, Zhenan Industrial Cluster (Economic Development Zone) and Rui’an. Among them, the Oujiang Beikou Tunnel is the most difficult control project of Line S2 Phase I that links Wenzhou and Yueqing, and is also the first river-crossing tunnel shield project in Wenzhou with oversized diameter construction.

“After the shield was started, we encountered many troubles such as soft soil, methane, and water yield at the bottom of the river. The construction was as difficult as punching a hole in tofu,” introduced Ge Gang, a front-line builder of Line S2. After repeated demonstration and many adjustments, the construction team finally overcame a series of complex problems such as construction monitoring technology for water-yield soft soil shield tunneling, high-precision construction technology for oversized diameter pipe pieces, explosion-proof transformation of shield equipment and methane gas release from the river bottom. After 437 days of uninterrupted construction, the shield of the river-crossing tunnel was completed on May 16th, 2021, setting three records, namely, the first shield tunnel in Wenzhou, the first deep foundation excavation in Zhejiang Province (with the foundation excavation being 52 meters deep), and the first oversized diameter composite lining tunnel in China.

In fact, the unyielding spirit of Wenzhou Rail Transit construction team was already manifest in the construction process of Line S1. Take the Line S1 swivel bridge crossing Hangzhou-Shenzhen Railway and Jinhua-Wenzhou Railway as an example. It is the first swivel construction project of the suburban railway crossing high-speed railway in China, and is also a swivel bridge project that crossed the most railroad strands and had the greatest safety risk in China at that time. In the absence of any successful cases to refer to, the team had no other choice but to continuously verify various schemes, and finally innovated the integral ball joint technology to maximize the balance of the T-structure swivel. After nearly 500 days and nights of hard work, the joints of the swivel bridge were finally finished and received the attention of CCTV and other media.

Innovating construction technologies to be national model

Swivel bridge is only one of the hard nuts that Line S1 workers cracked. WZMTR staff revealed that as the country’s first new suburban railway line, Line S1 had no mature standard system to follow in its construction. To formulate a complete set of standard system for construction, the group studied the suburban railway standard system, established a body of technical standards in line with the positioning of Wenzhou Rail Transit, and gradually evolved it from “corporate standards” to “national standards”.

The national social organization standard of The Code for Design of Suburban Railway (hereinafter referred to as The Code) was compiled on the basis of the construction practice of Wenzhou Rail Transit Line S1. Technical parameters involved in The Code such as station spacing of the commuter express, station safety line, and commuter vehicles are adopted from Wenzhou experience. The Code also incorporates the technical innovation of the four core mechanical and electrical systems of Wenzhou Rail Transit, such as vehicles, signals, communications and power supply.

From crossing the river by feeling the stones to being the pioneer of industry standard, the filler of technology gap and the national model, Wenzhou Rail Transit has achieved a metamorphosis from “a pioneer” to “a national role model”, and constructed a provincial benchmark project. In the process of the project, it actively established “quality engineering” construction standards, promoted the construction of 21 factory facilities such as reinforcing steel plant, mixing station, pipe prefabrication, etc., and successively realized 18 process innovations and 7 equipment micro-innovations such as the integrated construction platform of pier formwork, intelligent pressure grouting machine, small component processing, etc. Several intelligent management platforms such as engineering information management, BIM technology application and video information monitoring have also been set up.

Work in the front line for two years out of sense of responsibility

During the Spring Festival this year, more than 500 workers stayed at the site to carry out the construction of Line S2. Wang Defu, a 24-year-old worker from Henan at the bid section of SG2, who has participated in the construction of Line S2 since his graduation, has not been back to his hometown for two years. He said that the project was at a crucial juncture, and he would consider going back to hometown to get married after Line S2 was finished.

A personnel from WZMTR said that although the construction team members were from different cities, they had something in common, which was dedication and commitment for the project. They support each other, face problems together, and fully demonstrate the team spirit of devotion, sense of responsibility and entrepreneurship. Among them, there are many leading lights. Chen Shaoken, who dedicates his life to the construction cause; Liu Qifeng, who came to Wenzhou from the northeast China to work for the rail transit for ten years; Xu Changjian, who is rooted in the front line of the construction all day long; Guo Xin, a “Model Worker of Zhejiang Province” who stays in Wenzhou alone; Su Wenhai, a young party member who takes the construction site as his home; Zhou Da, who is decisive in policy implementation, as well as dozens of party members such as Hong Chengpo and Xiao Haidong. The construction team has won more than 20 honors, such as Zhejiang Model Group, Provincial Pioneer Worker, Wenzhou Outstanding Contribution Group for Transportation and Major Project Award.

“On the way to pursue our dreams, we will march forward nonstop, and sweat and toil in the front line.” As the construction of Line S2 will be almost completed this year, the bugle for Line S3 construction has sounded. The builders of Wenzhou Rail Transit will continue to charge ahead and contribute their shares to the construction of “Wenzhou, a happy city featuring a millennial trade port”.
