A few days ago, at a middle school in Wenzhou, a student had a sudden cardiac arrest. In a short time, his heartbeat was recovered by operating an AED (automatic external defibrillator) placed at the school, and other rescue measures. Then he was sent hospital for further treatment. It is the first time that the AED has been used in emergency in the city. At present, there are 424 sets of AED first aid equipment distributed every part of Wenzhou, according to the Wenzhou First Aid Center.

At 12:33 on March 18, Wenzhou 120 Emergency Command Center received a request for help as a middle school student in Wenzhou fainted on the playground. Then the center dispatched an ambulance, with a first aid team on, to the scene immediately.

On the way, by contacting the person reported to the center, Xie Xumin, an emergency doctor, learned that the student had suffered cardiac arrest, and that the teachers were performing chest compression for him, and had sent a person to get the AED just placed at the school.

After 9 minutes, the team arrived at the scene. After preliminary examination, an emergency doctor confirmed that the student's heartbeat and breath had stopped. At the same time, the fetched AED was connected to his body, and Doctor Xie immediately conducted defibrillation for him, which was a must shown on the device, and persistently carried out cardiopulmonary resuscitation. Finally, the student recovered his heartbeat and was sent to hospital.

In order to help citizens carry out self and mutual rescue in the four-minuter prime time in case of their stopping heartbeat to reduce the accidental risk of losing life, Wenzhou has arranged AED first aid equipment at 424 spots in public places since 2019.

According to statistics, there are more than 500 cases of cardiac arrest in Wenzhou every year, and more than 80% of them are caused by ventricular fibrillation. Therefore, it is particularly important to provide AEDs in important public places, such as schools and shopping malls so that the AED can play an crucial role in giving first aid in prime time to a person with the disease happening before professional rescuers arrive.

It is learned that the prime time for rescuing cardiac arrest is 4 minutes. When patients with cardiac arrest are treated with AEDs within one minute, the survival rate of them can be as high as 90%. The AED is called a "life saviour” for those at risk of sudden cardiac death. The device can automatically identify defibrillation rhythm. If defibrillation is required, the instrument will automatically release a high-energy current for electric shock defibrillation to terminate fatal arrhythmia. Therefore, when someone is found lying on the ground and it is judged that he or she has no spontaneous breathing, we should immediately implement cardiopulmonary resuscitation, and use an AED for the first aid as soon as possible.
