Founded in 1919, the First Affiliated Hospital of Wenzhou Medical University (also known as the First Provincial Wenzhou Hospital of Zhejiang, FHWMU) is one of the first four Grade A hospitals approved in 1993 in Zhejiang. It now provides medical and health services to nearly 30 million people living in southern Zhejiang and northern Fujian. By service scale and volume of hospital visits, FHWMU ranks the first in Zhejiang. Nationwide, it ranks the 11th and 13th respectively by service scale and the volume of hospital visits. By comprehensive strength, it ranks No. 73 among the top 100 hospitals in China and the third on the list of top 100 hospitals in prefecture-level cities across China.

Occupying an area of over 530 mu (approximately, 353,510 square meters) with a total construction area of 430,000 square meters), FHWMU now has two branches (sites): the new hospital branch located in Nanbaixiang, Ouhai District and the old one located on Gongyuan Road, Lucheng District. The new branch located in the Life & Health Town of Ouhai District is some 100 meters from the Wenzhou South Exit of the Ningbo-Taizhou-Wenzhou Expressway. FHWMU has a staff of more than 5250 employees including 609 people with senior professional tiles, 200 master’s supervisors and 23 doctoral supervisors. Some 300 people are recruited by various Talent Projects at different levels including 1 named as a “National Young and Mid-aged Expert with Remarkable Contribution”, 1 selected as a “National Talent of the New Century Hundred-Thousand-Ten Thousand Talent Project”, 1 awarded the title of “NHFPC Young and Mid-aged Expert with Remarkable Contribution”, 8 recipients of the “State Special Allowance for Experts”, 2 named as “Zhejiang Young and Mid-aged Expert with Remarkable Contribution”, 7 selected as candidates of “Zhejiang Provincial Thousand Talent Project”, 40 members of “Zhejiang Provincial New Century 151 Talent Project” and 9 recruited by “Zhejiang Provincial Healthcare High-level Innovation Talent Project”.

Being one of the leaders in clinical diagnosis and treatment by comprehensive strength in China, FHWMU is a center in southern Zhejiang and northern Fujian for the diagnosis and treatment of difficult and complicated diseases. The hospital is notably influential in the country in the diagnosis and treatment of critically ill pancreatic patients, cardiovascular intervention, hematopoietic stem cell transplantation, reproductive medicine, respiratory disease diagnosis and treatment, emergency medicine, organ transplantation and other fields. With the building of a helipad and the establishment of the first air medical rescue base in southern Zhejiang, an Air-Land-Sea medical rescue system has initially taken shape in FHWMU. The hospital boasts a number of sophisticated medical equipment including PET/CT, 320-row CT, VMAT function linear accelerator, 3.0T MRI, SPECT, DSA, and biochemical/immunological laboratory automation system. In 2016, the hospital handled nearly 4,190,000 outpatient & emergency visits, admitted approximately 147,300 inpatients by an average of 3623 beds and performed more than 73,500 operations.
