WKU Welcomes 800 Freshmen

On the evening of September 5th, Wenzhou-Kean University(WKU) held the Convocation Ceremony of Class of 2024 undergraduates and the first cohort of 27 graduate freshmen. This underscored the rapid progress of the University and represented a milestone in its development.

At the ceremony, there were nearly 800 freshmen, including undergraduates, postgraduates and doctoral candidates. In addition to undergraduates from 19 provinces and cities,including Hong Kong, Macao, and Taiwan, as well as the United States, South Korea, Venezuela, Bangladesh and other countries, there are also 27 first cohort of postgraduates and doctoral candidates from Beijing, Liaoning, Shandong, Hebei, Jiangsu and Zhejiang Province. This is the first year that the University has seen a cohort of graduate students, aging from 22 to 44 years old, enrolled in the three programs. The cohort includes 11 doctoral candidates in Educational leadership (Ed.D.), 12 students in Instruction and Curriculum (M.A.) and 4 in Biotechnology science (M.S.). WKU provides them with generous scholarships, with scholarship coverage as high as 80%.

Although this is the first year of graduate admission, the application competition for masters and doctors is very fierce. The applicants include a British student, Associate Dean of the School of Design, Zhejiang Vocational and Technical College of Industry and Trade who applied for Educational Leadership, and an English teacher of Wenzhou No. 3 Middle School who is awarded full scholarship. WKU graduate program uses English as the medium of instruction, and adopts the curriculum and training programs of the counterpart program of Kean University in the US, with a full-time master's degree of 1 to 3 years and a doctoral degree of 3 to 5 years; on-the-job master's degree of 2 to 4 years, and doctoral degree of 4 to 7 years. Graduates will be awarded Master’s and Doctorate degrees from Kean University in the US, which can be accredited by the Ministry of Education of China.

At the ceremony, Chancellor Wang Li delivered a speech on the topic of “Win-win Cooperation, Active Dedication, and Strive to Be at the Frontline of Globalization". He said that Wenzhou-Kean has been synonymous with globalization since its foundation. The faculty are all recruited globally, from 35 countries and regions, and more than 60% of undergraduates go to world-renowned universities for further study, including Harvard University and Columbia University, University of Pennsylvania and other top universities; many students to various international conferences such as the United Nations and APEC.

At the end of the ceremony, there was a surprise. Lamont Repollett, Chancellor of Kean University, expressed a warm welcome to freshmen via video. In the next two weeks, freshmen will experience WKU characteristic English environment through games, cooperation, speeches, presentations and other activities in Pre-University Intensive English Program(PIEP).
