A Large-scale International Airport Rises in Wenzhou

On July 12, 2020, Wenzhou Longwan International Airport celebrated its 30th anniversary. As of June 30, 2020, it has guaranteed 30 years of safe production, receiving a total of 1.1244 million flights and 120 million passengers since it was opened to traffic.

Wenzhou Longwan International Airport was officially opened on July 12, 1990. As a national first-class airport and a domestic second-class civil airport, it influences the four regions of Wenzhou, Taizhou, Lishui and Ningde. Its airfield area is rated 4E-class, with a 3200-meter long and 45-meter wide runway and a 3200-meter parallel taxiway. The airport can accommodate simultaneously the takeoff and landing of 28 aircraft during peak hours, and can guarantee the takeoff and landing of Boeing 747-400, Airbus A340-600 and aircraft of smaller sizes. Now, the airport has two terminal halls with a total area of 129,500 m2, among which Terminal 2 for domestic flights is 116,000 m2 and Terminal 1 for international flights is 13,500 m2. The parking apron is 534,000 m2 with 59 stands and 29 boarding bridges.

In 2017, Wenzhou Airport Group merged into Zhejiang Airport Group, opening a new chapter of high-quality development in a new era. In 2018, the annual passenger throughput of Wenzhou Airport exceeded 10 million passengers for the first time, putting Wenzhou Airport among the ranks of large-scale international airports receiving tens of millions of passengers annually. In 2019, Wenzhou Airport fulfilled the target of handling the takeoff and landing of 92,300 flights, the passenger throughput of 12,219,700, and the cargo and mail throughput of 81,100 tons, an increase of 6.87%, 9.56%, and 1.14%, respectively. Over the past 30 years, Wenzhou Airport has had flights reaching 150 cities, including 32 international (regional) cities; as of June, it has had flights to 95 cities this year, including 21 international (regional) cities; 154 routes are in operation this year, including 133 domestic routes, 4 regional ones and 17 international ones. Besides, 49 airlines operate in Wenzhou, for example, Air China has a branch in Wenzhou, and airlines such as China Eastern, Loong Air, Shanghai Airlines, China Southern Airlines, Juneyao Airlines and Shenzhen Air have established overnight bases in Wenzhou.

The achievement of Wenzhou Airport is inseparable from the support and assistance of the on-site organizations and airlines, as well as the care of people from all walks of life and the general public,” said Xiao Feng, The Party Secretary and Chairman of Wenzhou Airport Group. With the goal of “becoming an important airport and a large international airport in the world-class airport clusters in the Yangtze River Delta region”, Wenzhou Airport will continue to accelerate its construction of a comprehensive transportation hub and enhance its capacity for transportation. It will speed up the construction of aviation logistics park to push forward the development of Wenzhou’s airport economic industry and promote the preliminary research and approval of the third phase of the expansion project of Wenzhou Airport, including the construction of the second runway, the expansion of the existing runway, and the construction of the new Terminal 3 hall. According to the plan, by 2030, Wenzhou Airport will have a passenger throughput of 30 million, a cargo and mail throughput of 285,000 tons, and 233,000 times of aircraft takeoff and landing.
