A few days age, the state Ministry of Education issued a document, approving the establishment of Alberta Institute,Wenzhou Medical University(WMU). The Institute is a sino-foreign cooperative college established by WMU as a non-independent legal entity, which is WMU’s unprecedented move.

The Alberta Institute, Wenzhou Medical University is the first sino-foreign joint educational institution focusing on clinical medicine in China. This year, it will enroll the first batch of students. The college will offer undergraduate courses in clinical medicine, master's degree programs in stomatology and psychiatry, and doctor's degree programs in psychiatry. It will totally enroll 90 students each year, including 60 undergraduates, and 25 master’s degree and 5 doctorial degree candidates. Its undergraduate or postgraduate student enrollment is included in the national unified enrollment program for regular institutions of higher learning or for postgraduate students. To enter the institute, students have to pass the national unified entrance examination for undergraduate or postgraduate students, and meet the relevant enrollment regulations and requirements. Upon graduation, both Chinese and foreign parties will issue corresponding degree certificates to qualified students. However, the institute will carry out independent enrollment for doctoral students, and award foreign degree certificates to qualified candidates upon their graduation.

The University of Alberta, as the foreign part of the joint institute, is a top research university in Canada, one of the top 100 universities in the world, ranking No. 89 worldwide in a recent report of the top 1,000 universities by the Center for World University Rankings (CWUR). Its colleges of medicine and stomatology are strong in education and research. As a clinical medicine research center in Canada, the university takes the lead in medical education and in the research of psychiatry, virology, diabetes, cancer and heart, and other fields.

The institute, jointly established by WMU and the University of Alberta, will systematically introduce Canadian medical education resources, integrate the advantages of both sides, innovate the college running mechanism and talent training mode, and explore the way to enable Chinese medical education to comply with international standards. Their efforts will contribute to building a model in higher medical education cooperation between China and Canada, and to promoting cultural exchanges and scientific research cooperation between the two.
