Wenzhou Medical University ranks 1001st + spot on Times Higher Education list

According to the latest “Times Higher Education (THE) 2020 World University Rankings” released on September 15, Wenzhou Medical University (WMU) is ranked the 1001st + (“+” stands for shared rankings) globally and the 71st domestically. Only four medical universities nationwide have made the table.

“THE World University Rankings” judge the performance of universities across five missions including teaching, research, knowledge transfer, international outlook and industrial revenue by using 13 performance indicators. This year marks the 16th years since the launch of the first “THE World University Rankings”. A total of 1396 universities in 92 countries are on this year’s list. The number of universities in mainland China on the list has increased from 72 to 81. Three universities in Zhejiang are on the list, namely Zhejiang University (ranked 107th), Zhejiang University of Technology and Wenzhou Medical University (tied for the 1001st spot).

Four independent medical universities in mainland China, namely: Nanjing Medical University (ranking 601-800th), Capital Medical University (ranking 801-1000th); Southern Medical University and Wenzhou Medical University( tied for the 1001st spot).

Winning a spot on the list has made Wenzhou Medical University a “world celebrity” institution of higher learning. What lies beneath the surface of WMU’s success is its ambition and efforts to aim at becoming a “first-class university in mainland China with international influence”. WMU has always been regarding academic discipline construction as the top priority of development, and has made a series of major breakthroughs, taking a solid step toward becoming one of the high-level medical universities in China. In particular, in recent years, WMU has launched a major plan for the Program of “Striving for the Building of First-class Universities and Disciplines” with detailed guiding opinions and implementation plans, which has further accelerated the move to building itself a “first-class university in mainland China with international influence”. WMU has made one after another new achievements in its discipline development and scientific research: WMU has been newly approved to confer professional doctoral degrees for the discipline of Clinical Medicine, and the academic doctoral degrees for the first-class discipline of Pharmaceutical Sciences, Basic Medicine, and Biomedical Engineering. The WMU has newly established a group of national-level academic disciplinary platforms including the National Clinical Medical Research Center, and the International Joint Center for Regenerative Medicine and Neurogenetics. Teaching team at the School of Ophthalmology and Optometry, WMU was honored as one of the first batch of Huang Danian-style Teaching Teams. 6 disciplines including the Clinical Medicine (entering the top 2‰), Pharmacology and Toxicology, Biology and Biochemistry, Molecular Biology and Genetics, Materials Science and Chemistry entered the top 1 percent in the global rankings set by the Essential Science Indicators. WMU has published articles on the academic journal of Nature as the primary author’s unit. Regarding research achievements, researchers from WMU have won honorary titles including the first and second prizes of the National Science and Technology Progress, the first prize of the Chinese Medical Science and Technology Award, the first prize of Natural Science Award of the Ministry of Education and the first prize of Natural Science Award of Zhejiang Province.

Up to now, WMU has made three of the world’s four most influential list of world university rankings: Academic Ranking of World Universities, USNews Best Global Universities Rankings and World University Rankings/THE Higher Education.
