On the morning of April 9th, 34 students from School of Humanities, Wenzhou University, arrived at Jiangxin Islet for a two-week field survey of historical, cultural and tourism resources. This marks the beginning of the exploration and integration of cultural and tourism resources of Jiangxin Islet in an all-round way.

“Students will work in groups to investigate and sort out the poetry culture, architectural culture, religious culture, water (well, spring) culture, animals and plants on the island,” said Jin Danxia, professor at School of Humanities of Wenzhou University, “by means of tourists’ interviews, comparative studies and so on, we will ultimately form the research report, tourism roadmap, scenic commentaries and otherws.”This special survey is entrusted by Lucheng District Tourism, Culture, Radio, Television and Sports Bureau, which involves 62 students all major in Creative Chinese at the School of Humanities of Wenzhou University. It is hoped that those students can give full play to their creative planning and practical writing skills in this field project, and do some down-to-earth basic work for Jiangxin Islet to tap human resources and enhance tourism experience.

With a history of more than 1600 years, Jiangxin Islet is not only a landmark of Wenzhou, but also an important symbol of Wenzhou culture and Wenzhouese nostalgia. It is well-known at home and abroad as “Island of Chinese Poetry” and “World’s Ancient Navigation Mark” and for Jiangxin Temple. Pitifully, with the rapid development of economy and society and the update of people’s concept of tourism consumption,Jiangxin Islet is faced with more and more problems, such as the single tourism product, outdated facilities and lack of interactive experience. For this reason, Lucheng District takes the exploration and utilization of historical and cultural heritage as an important measure to transform and improveJiangxin Islet. A series of work will be carried out, such as rubbing the carvingson Songjing (an ancient well of the Song Dynasty 960 – 1279) and restoring the old site of the British Consulate in Wenzhou, in order to find a realistic path for the integration of tourism and culture.

To make the survey more effective, Lucheng District Tourism, Culture, Radio, Television and Sports Bureau also invited many experts in the fields of cultural relics protection, historical architecture research, folk customs and so on to give instructions and participate in the whole process of investigation and exploration. “Jiangxinyu Island is the core of the culture along the Oujiang River and an important historical sector of the downtown area. There are as many as five provincial cultural relics protection units and a municipal one on the small geographical area of the island, which is rare in the whole country,” said Huang Peiliang, Deputy Director of the Municipal Institute of Cultural Relics Protection and Archaeology. He suggested thatto revitalize the historical and cultural resources on the island, the existing scenic spots, tourist routes, commentaries, etc. should be improved for a better quality of Jiangxin Islet tourism, and “Poetry Conference” and cultural and creative products should be exploited to develop the cultural IP of Jiangxin Islet.

Tang Zhanghong, Director of Wenzhou Architectural Culture Research Association who has studied the dipper-shaped geographical pattern of Wenzhou, believed as well that it is significant and necessary to tap the historical and cultural resources of Jiangxin Islet. “Many people think that the “lonely island” mentioned by the Chinese landscape poet Xie Lingyun (385-433) refers to the whole island of Jiangxinyu, but in fact it is not. In ancient times, Jiangxinyu was composed of two small islands, in the middle of which waswaters called Zhongchuan. In the waters there was a reef, which can be seen when the tide ebbed. That is the “lonely island” on which some ancient scholars recited poems,” explained Tang Zhanghong. She said that historical allusions like thoseshould bemade full use of since they would surely be more popular than some current stereotyped commentaries.

It is learned that the East and West Pagodas characteristic of Jiangxin Isletand the old site of the British Consulate will apply for the eighth batch of national key cultural relics protection units this year. With the exploration and integration of cultural and tourism resources, Jiangxin Islet, which carries Wenzhou’s history and culture for thousands of years, is expected to become a super cultural IP, attracting tourists at home and abroad with its unique beauty.
