Founded in 1998, The Eye Hospital of Wenzhou Medical University (Zhejiang Eye Hospital) with its general hospital in Wenzhou, Hangzhou Branch and Zhijiang Branch is the only medical institution in China that boasts a national key discipline of clinical ophthalmology and an outstanding key laboratory designated by the Ministry of Health. As a nationally advanced collective in the medical and health care system, the Hospital is the only Grade A eye hospital in Zhejiang. Thanks to its integrated and comprehensive strength in medical service, teaching and training, scientific research, industrialization of research findings, public welfare and promotion, the Hospital ranks the first in China by ophthalmology and optometry education, the second by scientific research strength in the field of ophthalmology, and is one of the top five hospitals for most reputed specialty of ophthalmology in China. The hospital has 19 clinical sub-specialties including Cataracts, Glaucoma, Cornea, Ocular Surface and External Disease, Eye and Nose-related Disease, Orbit Ocular Oncology, Ocular Plastic Surgery, Fundus Surgery, Children’s Ocular Fundus, Eye Wound, Excimer Laser, High Myopia, Fundus Internal Medicine, Uvea Disease, Visual Optics, Strabismus and Amblyopia, Low Vision, Corneal Contact Lens, TCM Ophthalmology, Genetic Eye Diseases and 6 clinic centers for Cataracts, Refractive Surgery, Minimally Invasive Orbital Plastic Surgery, Corneal Diseases, Fundus Surgery, and Fundus Internal Medicine, respectively. In 2016, the Hospital handled 635,000 outpatient visits, performed 46,000 operations and admitted 22,000 patients. In 2016, the hospital set up China’s first Ophthalmology General Practice Clinic and launched the first service model of treating patients by a team of well-known doctors and specialists in Zhejiang Province, and thus providing a more secure, efficient and convenient medical services through the hierarchical triage system. The Hospital is the site of the National Key Laboratory Incubation Base Jointly Constructed by the Zhejiang Provincial Government and the Ministry of Science and Technology, the Optometry Research Center of the National Health and Family Planning Commission, the Key Laboratory of Visual Science of the National Health and Family Planning Commission and the National Drug Clinical Testing Center. The Hospital’s scientific research programs have won the funding of the National “973” Project (employer of the leading scientist), the National “863” Project, the fund for special pre-research programs of the National “973” Project, the international cooperation programs of the Ministry of Science and Technology, and the special programs for the health industry of the National Health and Family Planning Commission. The Hospital has been awarded for its research findings with honors including 2 Second Prizes of the National Science and Technology Progress Award, 4 First Prizes of the Zhejiang Provincial Science and Technology Progress Award (4) and the Zhejiang Provincial Science and Technology Major Contribution Award. By exploiting its advantages in the specialty of ophthalmology & optometry, the Hospital has established the National Engineering Research Center for Ophthalmology & Optometry, the Modern Optometry Technology and Equipment Engineering Research Center of the Ministry of Education, China Ophthalmology & Optometry Medical Devices Industrial Technology Innovation Strategic Alliance, the Demonstration Base for the Optometry Medical Equipment and Instruments, the Optometry Industrial Coordinated Innovation Center, and other high-tech platforms. The Hospital is the clinical teaching base of Ophthalmology and Optometry in Wenzhou Medical University, one of the first standardized training bases for ophthalmology residents in China, and a national level base for medical continuing education. In addition, the Hospital has set up China’s first certified testing and evaluation center for optical service providers.
