Burundi Senate Speaker Visits Wenzhou

A delegation from the Republic of Burundi, led by the country’s Senate Speaker Reverien Ndikuriyo, came all the way from Africa to visit Wenzhou on a study tour from September 6 to 7.

Located on the south side of the Equator in central and eastern Africa, the Republic  of Burundi has a land area of 27834 square kilometers and a population of 11.2 million. As an economy primarily based on agriculture including animal husbandry with corn, rice and beans as the main crops,Burundiis one of the most underdeveloped countries in the world as declared by the United Nations.

Wenzhou has been in close contact with African countries, includingBurundi. Since 1972, Wenzhou Medical University (WMU) has selected and sent 39 outstanding medical personnel toMali,Namibia, Central Africa and other African countries to provide medical services for the local people. Nearly half of WMU’s international students are from African countries. With the support of Chinese Government Scholarship and the special scholarship offered by WMU, 9 students fromBurundiare reportedly to begin their study of clinical medicine and ophthalmology at WMU since this October for the purpose of facilitating the development ofBurundi’s medical and health services.

Mr. Zhou Jiangyong, Member of the Standing Committee of CPC Zhejiang Provincial Committee and Secretary of the CPC Wenzhou Municipal Committee, extended a warm welcome to the delegation and briefed them on the situation in Wenzhou. He said, to exploit the favorable situation of the increasingly closer bilateral relationship, Wenzhou is willing to share in good faith its development experience withBurundi. Wenzhou is going to proactively participate in Burundi’s industrialization, strengthen its cooperation with Burundi in agriculture, energy and other sectors。 Both sides will improve educational cooperation in the training of medical personnel and vocational education and training. Meanwhile, to promote the friendship cherished by both sides and the implementation of more exchanges and cooperation in more forms in more areas, more frequent personnel exchanges are expected and exchanges and cooperation in cultural, scientific and technological areas should be further enhanced. 

Reverien Ndikuriyo commented on his first visit to Wenzhou, saying that the trip has left him a deep impression and good memories. “The ‘Wenzhou Model’ emerging inChina’s reform and opening up is what we should follow at the moment. We would like to develop and grow by learning experience and lessons from the ‘Wenzhou Model’.” said the Speaker. He expected to strengthen exchanges with people from all walks of life in Wenzhou and send more students from his country to Wenzhou to learn technology and knowledge in medical service, machinery manufacturing and other fields. He also looked very much forward to the visit of entrepreneurs and medical teams from Wenzhou for study, exchange, providing guidance and sharing the successful experience and advanced technology and ideas withBurundi.

During their stay in Wenzhou, the delegation visited Wenzhou Planning and Exhibition Center, Wenzhou Museum, Wenzhou Medical University, Wenzhou Vocational and Technical  College, the Affiliated Eye Hospital of Wenzhou Medical University and other units. The delegation also held talks with entrepreneurs of the Wenzhou China-Africa Chamber of Commerce. 

Municipal leaders Yu Meisheng, Mi Jiankang, Wang Chi, and Xie Shuhua also met with and accompanied the delegation in their study tour.
