Turandot is one of the world's ten major opera, created by Giacomo Puccini on the basis of a short story named as Calaf and Chinese Princess. It has absorbed the southern folk song "Jasmine" melody with rich oriental flavor. Besides, the famous Nessun Dorma is one of the greatest opera arias in the history.

The story is set in Yuan Dynasty and involves Prince Calaf, who falls in love with the cold Princess Turandot whose name means “warm”. Any prince seeking to marry Princess Turandot must answer three riddles. If he fails, he will be executed. In the mean time, Calaf meets again with his long-lost father, Timur, vanquished King of Tartary and slave girl Liu. Then they witnesses the execution of the Prince of Persia and the heartless supervision of Turandot.

Attracted by the beauty of the princess, Calàf decides to win her, in spite of the objection of Liù and Timur. Calaf passes the test, whose right answer are hope, blood and Turando respectively. But Turandot still refuses to marry him. He offers her a way out: if she can learn his name by dawn, he will forfeit his life.

The princess catches his father and maid and tries to get the answer by force, so that Liu is tortured to death in order to keep the secret. Calaf accuses Turando of her ruthlessness. Finally, though Turando doesn’t know his name, she is moved by Calaf’s impetuous kiss. And she only declares she knows the stranger’s name: it is “Love”.
