Aferican Countries Seek Cooperation in Wenzhou

How to tap the market in over 50 African countries ? What business opportunities will Portuguese-speaking African countries present? To answer these questions, the Chinese & Portuguese-speaking African Countries' Provinces and Cities Exchange Meeting 2017 was held on Dec. 19 in Wenzhou. Delegations from Portuguese-speaking countries in Mozambique, Cape Verde, Guinea-Bissau, Sao Tome and Principe attended the meeting, and visited Wenzhou. Through exchanges, they shared their investment environment with Wenzhou's entrepreneurs to seek cooperation.

The event is hosted by the Chinese People's Association for Friendship with Foreign Countries, and organized by the Wenzhou Municipal People's Government. Wang Chi, Vice Mayor of Wenzhou, said in his address that Wenzhou has kept close ties with African countries. In particular, the friendly cooperation between the two countries has been expanding, and cultural exchanges have become ever wider and deeper in recent years, he added. The event provided enormous opportunities for Wenzhou to deepen its cooperation and exchanges with the African countries. Wang believes thatwith bright prospects for cooperation between both sides in resources, capital, and human capital, Wenzhou and Portuguese-speaking African countries will surely go further along the road for pragmatic and fruitful cooperation, which will gain mutual benefit and win-win results.

At the meeting, themed with “Chinese & African Countries’ Provinces and Cities Industrial Cooperation and Regional Poverty Alleviation”, Chinese representatives made exchanges with the provincial and municipal leaders from Portuguese-speaking African countries. The Mayor of Maputo, Mozambique, Vice Mayor of Praia, Cape Verde, and the representatives of Sao Tome and Principe, spoke about their national conditions. David Simango,  Mayor of Maputo, Mozambique, said that Portuguese-speaking African countries, all located on the coast, boast mineral resources. These countries are vigorously making economic progress to shake off poverty, where there will appear enormous business opportunities, and Wenzhouese businessmen are welcome to make their investment.

Statistics from the CCPIT Wenzhou Branch show that last year, the trade volume between Wenzhou and Portuguese-speaking African countries amounted to USD 463.6 million, and from Jan. to Oct. this year, to USD 449.93 million, a rise of 25.16% YoY. The trade products mainly contain textiles and garments, electromechanical and audio-video equipment, plastics, rubber and its products, base metals and their products, furniture and so on. It is reported that about 2,000 Wenzhouese are currently investing or starting their own businesses in Portuguese-speaking African countries.
