In order to help local enterprises to further open up Brazilian and South American markets, Wenzhou held the first Wenzhou Export Commodities Expo Brazil (WECEB 2016) last week in Sao Paulo, Brazil, which closed a few days ago. More than 7000 customers from all over the world attended the Expo. It is the first time that this city has held an expo in a South American country, and the second time that it has held an expo overseas. (The city held one in India last year.)

It is learned that Wenzhou’s 43 enterprises participated in the Expo as exhibitors, who established 117 booths at the Expo. Among their exhibits are household articles, consumer goods, outdoor supplies, machinery and equipment, etc. During the Expo, Wenzhou held 28 trade matchmaking events with an on-the-spot turnover of USD 2.7 million, and intended turnover of 32.8 million.

Wenzhou Huixiang Foreign Trade Co., Ltd. specializes in making women’s shoes. Its general manager Zhou Lingyun said that the company mainly sells its products to European market, with only a few of them sold to Argentina and Chile in South America. The company’s attending the Expo is aimed to investigate Brazilian market and trade policies. “Our investigation confirmed that Brazil had indeed set a high trade barrier for protecting its booming shoe-making industry, which has only heard of before.” In spite of this, Zhou found a trade opportunity at the Expo, where a Brazilian native semi-finished footwear processing factory proactively contacted the manger for shoe processing. Therefore, it is hopeful that Wenzhou’s semi-finished shoes can be processed and sold in Brazil.

According to a source from the Wenzhou Municipal Commercial Affairs Bureau (WMCAB), though it is only the first time that local enterprises have “visited” South America by attending the Expo, they did achieve some results. To local exhibitors who have regular customers in Brazil, the Expo served as a platform for consolidating and expanding business in Brazil; to those who first came to Brazil, the Expo provided a good opportunity to learn more about and open up Brazilian market.

It is also reported that to foster local enterprises to exploit international market, in March this year, the WMCAB unveiled a catalogue for 45 major international expos to be held at home or abroad in 2016, in which 39 will be held overseas. Meanwhile the Bureau expanded the scope for granting allowances to foreign trade-oriented enterprises
