Performed by: The Russian National Model Dance Troupe“The Little Birch” Venue: Opera Hall, Wenzhou Grand Theater Sixty years ago, the Russian People’s Actor Н.С.Надеждина established “The Little Birch”, a dance troupe based on traditional Russian folk dance. With materials selected from folk legends, the troupe adopts classical ballet techniques, creating a unique style of dance art. Since its founding, it has been to over 100 countries across the five continents and figures prominently in the international arena, known as “the most beautiful business card of Russia” and deemed as Russia’s national treasure. In the spring of 1948, the troupe staged a Russian women ring dance called “The Little Birch” for the first time. No one had ever thought that it could cause such a sensation, since before that, traditional Russian folk dance art was famous for the enthusiastic and unrestrained characteristics of the Slavic nations, with male actors taking the lead. The ring dance by “The Little Birch”, a troupe made up by female actors only, turned out to be a new dance expression for Russian dance art on stage. It touched and overwhelmed all of the audiences with the unique gentle, demure and exquisite features of women. These gracious female images fully illustrated the inner purity, simplicity and elegance of Russian women, and interpreted the high tributes that the nation paid to beautiful yet tenacious women. As an important participant in “China-Soviet Cultural Exchanges”, the troupe has been a classical symbol of “Russian dances” among Chinese audiences after it gave a show of an overnight success during its visit to China on behalf of former Soviet government in 1955. Today, “The Little Birch” has been awarded with more honors and encouragement thanks to its constant artistic practices. For example, in 2004, it got Russian Presidential Culture Fund; in 2006, it became an artistic group under the direct leadership of “the President’s Office of Russia”, active on stages of important international activities as a special envoy of international cultural exchanges for Russian heads of state, showcasing the charm of Russia; in September 2012, it performed for “the World APEC Summit” as a cultural artistic symbol of Russian government at the invitation of President Putin. Undoubtedly, the performing art of “The Little Birch” has truly become a classical representative of Russian culture. |
