Wenzhou University (WZU) has recruited a record high number of over 260 international students from more than 40 countries around the world this semester. It was successfully listed in 10 Higher Education Institutes Featured in Internationalization in Zhejiang Province. In addition, WZU has become one of the first batch of Chinese Educational Bases designated by the Overseas Chinese Affairs Office of the State Council, a university approved to accept students funded by the Chinese Government Scholarships, and has the qualifications to recruit students from Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan through the “Joint University Admission Examination for Students in Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan”.
These achievements are inseparably associated with WZU’s strategy for actively advancing educational internationalization via the four “platforms” it has been actively developing in recent years.
Firstly, WZU has been actively building the platform of establishing friendly relations with overseas schools to broaden its students’ international perspective. Up to now, WZU has established friendly and cooperative relations with nearly 75 colleges and universities in 18 countries and regions around the world. WZU has established the Student Overseas Exchange Scholarship for its students. From 2011 to 2015, the number of students participating in overseas exchange programs increased from 51 to 396. WZU students have constantly achieved success in various international competitions and some of them have been recruited by the New York University, Hong Kong University and other elite universities in the world.
Secondly, WZU finds unique ways for students to study abroad by taking advantage of the platform featuring overseas high-quality educational resources. For example, WZU and the U.S. Kean University co-founded the Wenzhou-Kean University, an independent legal entity under Chinese Law, in 2011. WZU now supports WKU by providing faculty for the application and construction of architecture, psychology, finance and other disciplines. WZU in collaboration with Niels Brock-Copenhagen Business College, Demark offers a joint marketing undergraduate program. In 2014, two WZU students were awarded the Grand Prize of Challenge Cup Entrepreneurship Plan Competition in Zhejiang Province. WZU and Chung Hua University (Taiwan) now offer a joint electronic information engineering undergraduate program.
At the same time, WZU actively engages in building the platform for the professional construction of educational internalization to improve the quality of international student education. WZU has set up two programs (Mechanical Engineering, International Economics and Trade) of internationalization construction. Courses of both programs are conducted fully in English. The undergraduate program of Mechanical Engineering has been approved as a provincial level program of internationalization construction. Moreover, WZU has been approved as a university to accept students funded by the Chinese Government Scholarships.
In addition, WZU promotes international exchange of its faculty and staff by establishing the platform for international academic exchange and scientific research cooperation. In the field of humanities and social sciences, WZU has established scientific research cooperative relations with overseas universities such as Monash University of Australia and Chung-ang University of Korea. In the field of natural sciences, WZU has developed high-level international scientific and technological cooperation platforms, such as “International Scientific and Technological Cooperation Base of Laser Processing Robot”. WZU has carried out strategic cooperation with more than 10 internationally renowned universities and scientific research institutions including the laser micro-processing laboratory of the National University of Singapore, the Ohio State University of the USA, the Russian National Information University. WZU has also set up international scientific and technological cooperation platforms with the University of Northern British Columbia, the Akron University of the USA and other international well-known universities. Besides, WZU has hosted many international academic conferences of different disciplines.
It is reported that internationalization will be an important strategy for the development of Wenzhou University. In the future, the internationalization of Wenzhou University will closely follow the “Belt and Road Initiative” and the footsteps of Wenzhou people to serve the development of China. Internationalization will provide WZU with unique advantages and resources for its future development.
