Hu Ruyi, an overseas returnee born in Wenzhou who formerly worked as a research and development project manager in the UK’s largest water company—— the United Utilities finally gets his own research payoffs successfully applied to the treatment of the black and stink rivers back hometown. Recently, Weisipu River at the crossroads of Binhai 2nd Road and Binhai 2nd Avenue, one of the 11 rivers under remediation by the team led by Hu Ruyi, passed the water quality inspection of the environmental protection authority.

In 2011Hu Ruyi was invited as a water treatment specialist to give a lecture on water environment protection to staffs from the Municipal Environmental Protection Bureau, Wenruitang River Protection and Management Commission and other related governmental departments. In addition to the introduction of advanced foreign water treatment concepts and methods as well as his technology patented in the UK, Hu who grew up along Wenruitang River expressed the wish to help the remediation of the mother river of Wenzhou by using his own skills and experience. To translate the ideas into action, he and three colleagues engaged in environmental protection for years founded Zhejiang Reach Green Environmental Technology Co., Ltd. in Wenzhou High-tech Development Zone.

The destruction of river ecology often starts with the demise of fish and other higher animals before the plankton and other lower organisms die off. If even the lower organisms can hardly survive, it means the water in the river has completely lost its vitality. Hu Ruyi told reporters that pollution control and remediation of river can only be done in a backward manner: the first step is to eliminate the black-odor condition of the river; the second step is to continue to improve water quality to provide a basis for rebuilding the ecosystem of the water environment; the third step is to gradually restore the ecosystem to increasingly strengthen the water purification capacity. In 2013, the team led by Hu accepted the task of water treatment of 11 rivers in Lucheng, Ouhai, the Economic Development Zone and the Ecological Zone of Wenzhou. Without exception, all these 11 rivers are serious in black-odor condition with ecosystem on the verge of collapse.

 “Tailor-made” River Revival Plan

Hu Ruyi showed a photo of the river before treatment to reporters. At the time of photo taken, Weisipu River with water as black as ink was covered with a large quantity of foam, and the oil slick on part of the water surface was glowing blue under the sun. In contrast to the black and stinky water in the river, the well-established riverside green belt lost the glamour it should have.

Now, after more than four months, significant changes have taken place here. The water is clear and bright in a transparent green tone; evergreen iris is planted inside the river; oxygenation fountains and aerating apparatuses create ripples across the water surface… Members of the team led by Hu Ruyi told reporters that three types of methods were taken in the treatment: first, the engineering methods taken to block the major drain outlets and treat the overflow ports in a targeted manner to reduce the pollution directly discharged into the river from the very source. Second, the technical methods taken to rapidly get rid of the existing pollutants by applying the core microbial technology awarded with a number of patents. Third, the landscape methods to improve river landscape and promote ecological restoration by growing plants, setting up fountains and other layout. It took only one and a half months to solve the problem of black and stinky water after taking the above methods.

The key to river remediation is to “revitalize” the water. Weisipu River is mainly polluted by industrial wastewater. After times of site investigationsthey integrated all the sewage pipes into one to prevent the pollutants from being discharged into the river.  The small “sewage treatment plant” consisting of geo-membrane, box, fillers and microbial agents is like a multi-layer filter paper. Its first layer is the ecological floating bed with beneath filler, aerating apparatuses and submerged plants to provide a good environment for the effective function of the microbiological water purifiers. Layer by layer, the sewage is purified by the biological agents and other technical means before being discharged into the river. Currently, relevant technologies developed and improved by Hu Ruyi are being widely used in the remediation of the rivers, for which he and his team are responsible.

According to the monitoring results of the Municipal Environmental Monitoring Center, several important quality indicators of the water in Weisipu River have dropped considerably, for example, the ammonia-nitrogen indicator that is most difficult to control has decreased from 30mg/L to 4.5mg/L on average; the potassium permanganate index has decreased from 11mg/L to 4.8mg/L on average; total phosphorus has decreased from 0.1mg/L to 0.07mg/L. All the indicators have met the acceptance criteria.

“Each of these rivers has its own characteristics, and we developed different remediation plans for them. In particular, different engineering methods should be taken, depending on the circumstances of the river” said Hu Ruyi. For example, as the source of Lianzhanghou River was in serious siltation, they built a zigzag bridge-like artificial wetland to prolong the contact of the water with microbial organisms, and thereby improving the eutrophication of the river. In the Shuangjingtou River with upright riverbank revetment, they used river silt to construct artificial shoal in simulation of the natural river to provide habitat for the fish and planktons.
