The boxwood carving, as a folk handicraft, is made of boxwood, which has smooth surface, delicate texture and solemn color. Boxwood is originally milky yellow, becomes ginger after being lacquered, and will become darken with time elapsing, showing light orange later and red brown at last. The wood is thus endowed with a beauty of primitive simplicity and elegance, becoming more precious. Yueqing of Wenzhou is the cradle of boxwood carvings in Zhejiang Province. Yueqing’s boxwood carvings, together with Dongyang Wood Carvings and Qingtian Stone Carvings, are reputed as Top Three Carvings in Zhejiang Province.
