It is a unique ancient tradition for observing Lantern Festival in Taishun County to organize a communal feast. The event originated from the practice of “Praying for Well-being in Spring”, a clansmen’s prayer ceremony to strengthen connections between relatives, discuss issues concerning the people of the same clan, and pray for good harvest, safety and peace. The tradition began in the Northern Song Dynasty, over 970 years ago. As legend goes, the farmers of Zhangzhai Village (where all the villagers have the same family name of “Zhang”) in Hebei Province fled here in the Southern Song Dynasty (1127-1279) to escape a war. On each Lantern Festival, they would have a feast together. The Communal Feast in early years was only attended by clansmen. Later, it evolved into a social function and was said to be very popular in the Ming and Qing dynasties (1368-1911). Today, the Communal Feast is held in the open along a street ofLuoyang Town of Taishun County and anyone can participate as long as he or she pays a small sum of money.
