During Guangxu’s reign in the Qing Dynasty (1616-1911), two local brothers, Chen Dahai and Chen Suihai, made and sold deep-fried lamp cakesat a place near the east gate of ancient Wenzhou city. They paid special attention to its quality, in particular ingredients. Having crispy skin and tasty turnip strip and meat fillings, the cake soon became a household name. As the cake is fried on a concave metal disk, which looks like the main component of a local vegetable oil lamp in the past, it was called Deep-Fried Lamp Cake. |
