
In 2000 the foreign trade volume in Wenzhou totaled 2.02 billion US dollars, an increase of 64.3 percent over the corresponding period of the previous year, and export increased 82.1 percent to 1.5 billion US dollars and import 27.9 percent to 0.52 billion US dollars. Export of mecha-nical and electrical products with the higher content of science and tvechnology accounted for one third of the city's total, while export of glasses, lighters, air-conditioners and motorcycles greatly increased up to 169 countries and regions, with the export value to the four markets, the United States, European Community, Japan and Hongkong,totaling 544 million US dollars. In 2000 Wenzhou approved 84 new foreign-funded enterprises with the total investment of 67.06 million US dollars, contracted lbreign investment of 221 million US dollars and actually used foreign in-vestment of 72.02 million US dollars, representing an in-crease of 20 percent, 67.3 percent, 44.4 percent and 28.26 percent respectively, of which 12 enterprises have the contracted foreign investment of over one million US dollars. By the end of 2000, the city's approved foreign-funded projects added up to 1.475 with the total investment of 3,1 billion US dollars, contracted foreign investment of 1.48656 billion US dollars and actually used foreign inve-stment of 536.48 million US dollars. In 2000 the contracted capital in the newly signed contracts for overseas engine-ering projects reached 7.2654 million US dollars and the actually completed turnover amounted to 4.7375 million US dollars representing an increase of 114.6 percent and 49.58 perceni respectively. The newly approved overseas based enterprises numbered 20, with an accumulative total of more than 50. The personnel sent abroad for labour ser-vices accumulated to 1041 persons / times.
